Yankees chief executive Brian Cashman is unlikely to have the green light to spend more than $ 300 million without consulting owner Hal Steinbrenner.
So, will Scott Boras, representing freelance player Bryce Harper, avoid Cashman and go straight to Steinbrenner? Buster Olney of ESPN reminds us that this strategy has been used by Boras with well known and very expensive free agents.
With top players, Boras will directly call the owners of the club. He does not hide that and it's a strategy that has worked for him many times, especially with the owner of the late Tigers, Mike Ilitch, as well as the Lerner family, owner of the Nationals. And, in fact, it makes sense for Boras to approach the issue in the same way when actors likely to order nine-digit contracts are involved, because in the case of such large contracts, few if any, the CEOs would have the autonomy needed to take out a contract like this.
When these big contracts are completed and press conferences are held to announce the contract, some agents choose to stay in the dark, out of camera range and issues. When Bryce Harper has signed, Boras will be on stage, next to his client, at the center of the stage.
This is not necessarily good news for the Yankees fans, who remember that the team was stuck with Alex Rodriguez, who had finalized his final contract with Steinbrenner. This disaster has cost the Yankees $ 66 million over its last four seasons.
