It would take more than Bryce Harper for the Phillies to make up the difference between 80 wins and a playoff spot in 2019. Harper alone would add a handful of victories, but if he came on board, the Phils would still have work to do before or after this signature.
Here is my ideal (realistic) ideal:
Sign Bryce Harper for 9 years, $ 360 million
That's $ 40 million a year. It's more total money than Giancarlo Stanton and it's $ 15 million more per year.
For the Phillies, the goal would be to give Harper and Scott Boras what they're looking for, while avoiding a 14-year contract.
If the Phillies were to get a nine-year contract with Harper, they would not pay him about $ 40 million after the age of 35.
Sign Zach Britton
Boom, there is your left-hander at the end of the round to pair with Seranthony Dominguez and an experienced close if Dominguez falters in this role at any time.
Britton would offer a unique look, like a southpaw with a power. Going from Pat Neshek to Dominguez via Britton would offer the opponent three completely different styles and repertoires in rounds 7 to 9. The Phillies close many tracks.

I am not in favor of paying more than $ 100 million to Patrick Corbin. I do not like the idea of exchanging good young players against James Paxton or Robbie Ray, who are subject to injury. There is no doubt that the three South American bosses have a ton of talent and legitimate skills, but that's a risk.
Paxton's career high is 160 innings. Ray ran 70 batters in 123 innings in 2018, with a higher average earned point than the year before.
If that is me, I would prefer to give Happ a $ 30 million two – year contract with an option to acquire for the third year. He's not as good as Paxton or Ray at his best, but Happ is more reliable, will cost less, and his last three years have been the best of his career. Since 2016, Happ is 47-21 with an ERA 3.44 in 88 starts, with 8.7 withdrawals on catches by 9 and 2.7 rides.
He would be fine in this rotation of the Phillies.
Exchange Maikel Franco in Padres against Craig Stammen, Robbie Erlin and a prospect
The Padres are interested in Franco, according to teammate Jim Salisbury. But it's hard for me to see San Diego parting ways with Kirby Yates, who scored a 2.14 lead with 90 goals retired in 90 innings in 63 innings as a finishing player and closer to last season. Yates is also mastered for a modest price. For the Phillies, Yates seems to be a too optimistic return.
Stammen and Erlin, however, could help Phillies staff launch pitchers. Stammen, who you probably remember from his seven seasons with the Nationals, just had his best year. He had a points average for 2.73 and 1.04 and WHIP in 73 appearances, scoring 88 in 79 and allowing only three home runs.
Erlin, a southpaw, made 39 appearances, 12 starts and showed excellent control by pushing only 12 batters in 109 innings. It would be an upgrade to Adam Morgan.
The Padres will also want to get rid of Wil Myers' underperforming contract, but there is no reason for the Phillies to assume its remaining $ 70 million unless they get a valuable asset like Yates.
Wilson Ramos sign
If Harper came on board, it would probably mean that Rhys Hoskins would come back to first base and Carlos Santana would play more at third base than expected.
If a trade with Santana can not be settled, then the Phillies' outer field and inner field will be defined. Where else is there to improve? Behind the plate.
Ramos and Yasmani Grandal are the two main players in the free agent market. Both come from very good offensive years and have some question marks. For Ramos, it is health. For Grandal, it's the lasting impression of his defensive playoff playoffs.
But both players will receive decent offers, as the offensive behind the plate is rare. There are simply not many catchers in the league who can hit.
Ramos was great for the Phillies … when he could play. The Phillies acquired it with 55 games to play and he played 33, scoring 337/396 / .483 with 10 hits and 10 walks in 101 selections.
His newest team, the Phillies, should know more about Ramos' health than any other club. If they feel comfortable, he can return to more than 400 appearances in 2019, they should bring him back. They can enjoy the staging of Jorge Alfaro as they see fit, but Alfaro does not offer and will never propose the offensive constancy of Ramos, who should still have at least two good years at 31 years old.
