Tesla has set up a special driving mode for its Model 3 Performance cars, specially designed for high-performance driving and racing.
The amendment, which was unveiled Thursday, also establishes the Performance version of the model 3 as a car to be driven on race tracks in competition or by enthusiasts.
Cars typically have stability and traction control systems that prevent them from slipping under different conditions, such as in tight bends. But sometimes pilots want to be able to slip just a little when they enter a turn – this can actually improve speed.
Tesla said it has replaced the typical driving system that prevents tires from skidding by its own "vehicle dynamics controller", which improves performance on a track when the track mode is activated. The driving mode of the car can be changed with a button.
The electric car maker said the system uses inputs to allow the car to slip as much as the driver wants in a turn. He bases his adjustments on the behavior of the driver. If the car does not slide enough, it will send power to the rear wheels. If it slips too much, it will send power to the front wheels to straighten the vehicle.
