PEKIN, Ill. (AP) – A woman from central Illinois is being treated for exposure to rabies after being bitten by a rabid bat.

The Tazewell County Department of Health has confirmed the sting of rabid bats this week.

The Star Journal reports that it is the second rabid bat bite reported in the Peoria area this fall. At the end of September, a rabid bat bit a dog in Chillicothe. The dog was quarantined and given another set of rabies vaccines.

The Illinois Department of Public Health reports that 81 bats have been tested positive for rabies in Illinois in 2018. Additional information is available online.

Rabies is a virus that affects the nervous system of humans and other mammals. Humans can contract rabies after being bitten or scratched by an infected animal.
