The killer who killed 12 people Wednesday in a country music bar in Thousand Oaks, California, once again brought the United States to a new period of mourning, tension and resignation from armed violence.
It also made headlines around the world, less than two weeks after a massive shooting in a Pittsburgh synagogue where 11 people were killed. In this week's commentary section, dozens of readers from countries other than the United States said they had trouble understanding why the Americans were allowing gun violence to continue.
Here is a selection of their comments. They have been slightly edited and condensed for clarity.
