NEW YORK – The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is up and will soon have 50,000 LED lights as one of New York City's star attractions: the gift of a same-sex married couple.
Norwegian Norway spruce 12 meters high and 72 feet high arrived Saturday morning on a flat bottom trailer and was hoisted by a crane in a location overlooking the Rockefeller rink.
The crowd will gather on November 28 to attend a televised ceremony that will see the tree burst alive with 8 kilometers of multicolored lights and a Swarovski crystal star of 300 kilograms.
The 75-year-old spruce comes from Wallkill, 96 km north of New York. It was given by Lissette Gutierrez and his wife, Shirley Figueroa, of their property. They nicknamed it "Shelby".
Millions of people should visit the tree that will remain in place until January 7th.
"Now it's not my tree, it's the world's tree, I'm so happy to be able to share it with everyone," Figueroa told Rockefeller Center on Saturday. "Millions of people will visit Shelby."
Figueroa, 49, said that she was referring to the tree as "her" because "I felt that she had a feminine mind."
Erik Pauze, the chief gardener of the center, is also busy with the tree during the summer, watering and feeding it with compost tea.
Figueroa said that when Gutierrez and she had bought their home, the previous owner stated that the Rockefeller Center gardener was interested in the tree.
Gutierrez, 47, initially said that she was reluctant to give up the spruce, but Figueroa convinced her.
Once the tree dismantled, it will be donated to Habitat for Humanity to help with housing construction.
