San Diego President Comic-Con International has died Saturday morning of the aftermath of a cancer, announced the organizers of the annual event.
John Rogers was battling glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. According to San Diego's Comic-Con International, Roger was elected president of Comic-Con for the first time in 1986 and re-elected every year since, making him the oldest president of the convention on pop culture.
Over the decades, Rogers has seen Comic-Con evolve in ways no one thought possible.
"John's mandate has allowed Comic-Con to move from a selective gathering of fans to the largest and most prestigious convention of its kind in the world," said Comic-Con.
Rogers is survived by his wife, sister and brother. Comic-Con said that instead of flowers, donations could be made in Rogers' honor to the American Brain Tumor Association or the American Civil Liberties Union.
The news of Rogers' death was announced a few hours after badges were handed out to fans for next year's convention, which will take place at the San Diego Convention Center from July 18 to 21, 2019. As in the past, Badges sold very quickly.
Comic-Con was born in 1970 in the basement of the American Grant Hotel, in the heart of San Diego, California. Over the decades, the "little possible event" has become a real monster, investing annually in the Convention Center, neighboring hotels and downtown San Diego.
Fans of Comic-Con generally attend the convention with elaborate costumes, transforming the city into a metropolis from the pages of fantasy and science fiction. The event has also become famous for celebrity sightings.
