Here are some highlights from postgame press conferences after Baylor’s 28-14 loss to Iowa State on Saturday.
Head coach Matt Rhule
On the fight: “When there was that earlier altercation, they dismissed both player. They also gave unsportsmanlike conduct to everyone on both sidelines, I guess to calm the game down.
“When they did that, the first official said to me ‘You had multiple people from your sideline run onto the field.’ That’s when I started talking to him. Not one Baylor person left the sideline. Not one player, not one Baylor person left the sideline. I’m not saying anything about Iowa State, coach [Matt] Campbell is a great coach, I’m sure he had his sideline handled… Two things in a row happened where no one left our sideline, so they still gave us a sideline penalty. I can’t tell you why, other than to just calm the game down, that’s the explanation I got.”
On Charlie Brewer’s ejection: “When later on, Charlie had that play. The referee felt like Charlie said something inappropriate to him. I think he used a cuss word, we thought it was because he got kicked in the head. I hadn’t had a chance to talk to Charlie. The official thought it was because he didn’t like his spot, so they gave him an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. So it’s supposed to be third and one, now it’s third and 16. They had to eject him from the game because it was his second unsportsmanlike, even though the previous unsportsmanlike was when he was sitting on the bench drinking Gatorade. I say that, not to complain, just a shame for him because he’s got to have his name there that he was ejected from a game for something unsportsmanlike when he never threw a punch. Apparently he questioned a referee about his spot, so he got ejected from the game.”
On the game as a whole: “Obviously disappointed in losing the football game for our team; they had multiple opportunities to win the game. This was a case of us beating ourselves and not taking advantage of opportunities, most importantly in the red zone and playing at the end of the game without our quarterback because of the earlier decisions by someone else to get involved in a fight. All the things we’ve done well: kicking game, lack of penalties, we overcame adversity, and we scored touchdowns. Our kids had a good mindset, but at the end of the day, we let them get too much of a lead. We’re 5-5 and got down in the first half. We just weren’t able to make the plays that you need to make in the red zone to go win the game.”
On red zone frustrations: “We had Denzel [Mims] wide open twice for a catch and score if they were caught. First drive we were down there and got a couple penalties that knocked us out of range. Missed the field goal. First time was good, because we thought we had them pinned down at the one. That was the thinking there.”
On the Baylor drive that stalled after an overturned play: “We thought we scored a touchdown. I fist-pumped, our sideline is going nuts, I walk down the other way, only then to hear that they’re reviewing the play before. From an emotional standpoint, you’re battling on the road.
