Some neighbors fled, others stayed in battle as the fire swept Bell Canyon

A thick and dense smoke covered the sky in Oroville, where hundreds of people filled the Nazarene Church, an evacuation center located 40 km from the ravaged city of Paradise.

The evacuees gathered Saturday afternoon around a television that broadcasted a college football game. Post-it notes and ripped notebook paper were affixed to a bulletin board with the names and contact information of people looking for loved ones.

"People have been mastered," said Steve Walsh, regional spokesman for the American Red Cross, who ran the shelter center. "They seem insensitive to what is happening."

Standing beside his white truck in the church parking lot, Markham Odell is remembered to have escaped from his property along the Feather River Canyon in Paradise on Thursday morning.
