Pelosi: "What Mueller might not think of a criminal act could be unforgivable"

"Acknowledge one thing: what Mueller might not consider a criminal act could be elusive," Pelosi told The Atlantic.

Pelosi said, however, that she wanted to see compelling evidence that Republicans would join any impeachment effort.

Some Democrats, including leading donor Tom Steyer, said Trump had already committed impenetrable acts.

"What you have, is a president who has publicly declared war on the Constitution this week.If this is not a hindrance to justice, what is it? "Hurdle?" said Steyer to The Atlantic, about Pelosi's comments.

He added that he had a deep respect for Pelosi, but commented, "My blood came out of my head."

Whitaker had previously criticized the Mueller probe, which he would oversee as Acting Attorney General.

In a separate interview with Margaret Brennan of CBS News, Pelosi attacked Whitaker's appointment.

"It is violence to the Constitution and the vision of our founders to appoint such a person to be the head of the legal services of our country, and it is bipartisan," said Pelosi.

A poll released last week showed voters were divided as to whether Democrats in the House should immediately begin impeachment proceedings against Trump.

The American Barometer survey, conducted by Hill.TV and the HarrisX polling firm, revealed that 40% of registered voters said Democrats in the House should begin impeachment, while 41% said Democrats in the House should not start the process.
