Sin. Cindy Hyde Smith, R-Miss., Said the backlash of an alleged joke of attending a "public hanging" in the front row was "ridiculous".
On November 27, Hyde-Smith will face Democrat Mike Epsy for the US Senate seat in Mississippi. Hyde-Smith made the remark during a campaign rally on Nov. 2 with cattle rancher Colin Hutchinson, according to the local WLOX station.
"If he invited me to a public hanging, I would be in the front row," said Hyde-Smith, laughing on behalf of his supporters. A video of his comment went viral Sunday.

Epsy, who is black, condemned Hyde-Smith's comment.
"Cindy Hyde-Smith's comments are reprehensible," Epsy said in a statement. "They have no place in our political speech, in Mississippi or in our country.We need leaders, not separators, and her words show that she lacks understanding and judgment to represent the people of our state. "
Hyde-Smith apologized for his comment as "an expression of exaggerated respect."
"Any attempt to turn that into a negative connotation is ridiculous," she said.
