Police were investigating a shootout involving a deadly officer at a bar in the southern suburbs, killing one and wounding four security guards.

Shortly after 4 am Sunday, officers responded to a call for shots fired at Manny's Blue Room Bar, located at 2911 S. Claire Boulevard. to Robbins, and a Midlothian officer entered the bar unloaded his gun against an armed man, who later died at the Oak Lawn Christ Medical Center, according to Sophia Ansari, spokesman for the Cook County Sheriff's Office.

The man was working on security at the bar and was identified as Jemel Roberson, 26, according to Ansari and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Roberson lived in the neighborhood of Homan Square in the West End.

Authorities issued little details about the shooting, but said the incident had started as a fight inside the bar, according to Robbins police chief Roy Wells, who took the say at a press conference Sunday morning.

Four other people in the bar were shot and wounded at the Oak Lawn Christ Medical Center and Metro South Hospital in Blue Island, Ansari said. Their wounds were not considered life threatening.

At least one of the wounded was considered a gunman, Ansari said. They were in detention, but it was not clear right away if other people inside the bar had fired shots.

Robbins police first responded to the shooting and sought the assistance of two Midlothian officers, according to a Midlothian police statement. One of these Midlothian officers "met a subject with a gun and was involved in an officer involved in shooting," according to their statement.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office has opened an investigation into the shooting in the bar. The shooting involving the Midlothian officer was being handled by the Illinois state police.

"It is Midlothian's policy to use the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force for all shootings involving officers to ensure transparency and maintain public confidence." said the Midlothian police.
