NEW DELHI / BENGALURU: Union Minister HN Ananth Kumar died Monday in Bengaluru at the age of 59. He was undergoing cancer treatment at Shankara Cancer Hospital in Bangalore.

As a result of serious complications and an infection, Kumar had been under ventilation for a few days. Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, the cancer was diagnosed at Kumar before the Karnataka assembly polls.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sadness at the passing of Ananth Kumar.

Ananth Kumar's mortal remains are now being transported to his home in Sumera, on Lalbagh Road, where it will be kept until 8 am for family members to pay tribute. Later, he will be transferred to the National College field.

Calling Kumar a friend, Rajnath Singh also offered his condolences to his family.

Kumar, six times a parliamentarian, has been ill for a few months and was treated in London and New York.

Tejaswini, Kumar's wife, had said Friday that the minister was receiving the best cancer treatment, but that a serious infection was causing him trouble. He was responding well to treatment, she said.

Ministers Rajnath Singh and Sumitra Mahajan, President of the Local Union, recently visited Ananth Kumar at the hospital.
