A Republican Senator from Mississippi facing a second round of elections against a black Democrat challenger later in the month said in a video released Sunday that she would be participating in a "public hanging" if she was invited by a cattle rancher with which she was campaigning. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith made the comments while campaigning in Tupelo before the second round of the election against Mike Espy on November 27, according to Lamar White Jr., editor of the Bayou Brief. White posted a video of Hyde-Smith's remarks on Twitter on Sunday, although it was not immediately clear when she made these comments. "If he invited me to a public hanging, I would be in the first row," can be heard, says Hyde-Smith. His comments elicited outrage from social media, where many saw his remark of "public hanging" as a clear reference to lynching. Hyde-Smith responded to indignation in a statement made Sunday night: "In a November 2 comment, I mentioned the acceptance of an invitation to a pledge to speak. "she wrote.
