Hyperloop train could come to India

(CNN) – Mumbai to Pune in less than half an hour?
This could be the case if a new train concept came to India.

Virgin Hyperloop One is a Los Angeles-based company, originally based on an idea from Tesla's founder, Elon Musk.

The company has just hired Jay Walder as the new CEO, and his plans for the company – which the president of Virgin's founder, Richard Branson – is president – are ambitious.

His first project will be a hyper-loop between the Indian cities of Mumbai, the most populous city in India, and Pune, which is the ninth.

The two cities are in the state of Maharashtra, about 150 km from each other, and the traffic between them can last more than four hours with traffic.

Hyperloop, however, claims to be able to move people from A to B in 25 minutes.

Virgin Hyperloop One, based in Los Angeles, was launched in 2014.

"This is the first new transportation technology for 100 years," Walder said. "Let's stop talking about mitigating the impact of the automobile and instead create something really new."

Although Virgin Hyperloop received a lot of press when it was launched in 2014, it has not yet produced a concrete product.

Walder has solid experience in transportation. Previously, he worked for the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) – the New York Metropolitan Transit System, which includes the subway – and for Motivate, a self-service bicycle company.

And it is not just about speeding up travel time. A spokesman for Hyperloop says that people who use their train instead of traveling by car will be beneficial to the environment by preventing 150,000 tonnes of carbon from being pumped into the air by automobiles.

"We have always thought that India would be a great market for the hyperloop," writes Harj Dhaliwal, general manager of the company, in a blog post. "The Indian state of Maharashtra has announced its intention to build a hyper-loop road between Mumbai and Pune, starting with an operational demonstration runway."

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi supported the project and was present, alongside Branson, at the signing of the agreement.
