After mid-term elections in 1998, Ananth Kumar was appointed minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee cabinet. He was then the youngest minister in the center. He was the Minister of Civil Aviation. Then, the leader of the JDU, Sharad Yadav, succeeded him as Minister of Civil Aviation after the 1999 election in Lok Sabha.
