ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) – A Florida police officer was arrested after being forced to leave a plane because he was drunk and beaten by an employee of the airline.
Pinellas County sheriff's officials said Derrick Gilbert, 51, smelled of alcohol and shouted profanations to Allegiant Airline staff when deputies arrived at the international airport. St. Pete-Clearwater Friday. Authorities said he initially refused to leave the plane after staff said they had a zero tolerance policy with regard to intoxication.
The airline staff said that Gilbert was so drunk in the plane that he could not find his seat, chatted in his speech and seemed confused. A witness testified that Gilbert pushed an airline employee and angrily seized her 18-year-old son when the teenager tried to calm Gilbert down.
Gilbert is a police officer from Sarasota. He is accused of beating the staff of an airline, battery and intrusion.
