People thought the new Browns offensive coordinator, Freddie Kitchens, was joking last week. When he discussed his goals for the Falcons game, he suggested, "I want to get to the heart of the wish."
The Browns, however, played a variation on Sunday school training, putting three defensemen in the background with quarterback Baker Mayfield at the same time for a few games. The new look was part of an attack that seemed to often confuse the Falcons.
"It was something, no?" Said Mayfield, via Hayden Grove of Cleveland Plain Dealer. "We took a different look. We moved the ball well. It was just one thing to change the tempo, and I think it was fine for our attack. "
It was actually a reverse version, with Nick Chubb directly behind Mayfield and Duke Johnson and Darrun Hilliard on either side. At one point, Johnson even opted for Chubb before he was tackled for a defeat.
Acting coach Gregg Williams was a little worried that Kitchens dropped the secret earlier this week, but a win made it possible for everyone to enjoy it.
"When he joked, I thought," Oh, here we go "because it was [in the plan]Williams said, "We want this group of players to come in. We also wanted to see how they would react, how could they visualize or see the package?" We had a good package of games. It's also an uncomplicated concept to try to keep this program on the ground, and Freddie and the offensive staff have been very good at using what we have here. "
If it's nothing else, it's one more thing for Browns opponents to get ready, so do not be surprised if Kitchens is talking about Wing-T concepts this week.
