Some good foods and some bad foods for diabetes

November is Diabetes Month and this Wednesday, January 14th is National Diabetes Awareness Day. Although more than 100 million Americans have diabetes or pre-diabetes. About 9% of the population has diabetes. Minnesotans as a whole are a little below average with about 8% of the population of states with diabetes. One in four do not realize that they are diabetic.

I found it interesting with regard to foods. Here are some that are not good for diabetes. White rice should be a no no. Studies show an 11% increase for each additional daily serving of white rice. It is recommended to go with brown or wild rice. Another food that surprised me was the dehydrated fruit. I just assumed that the fruits would be good. However, dehydrated fruit tends to make people eat too much because they do not fill you as fast as fresh fruit.

The foods that are good for you include cinnamon. I have never thought of that, but I imagine that it helps to lower the blood sugar level. Tomatoes are a source of good nutrition and they also slow down the blood sugar level. Kale, strawberries and nuts are just a few other foods that can be beneficial for someone with diabetes.

One thing that I found interesting is a small study of a sample made in England several years ago. This tends to show that if you eat pasta, it might be better to let them cool and then reheat them as leftovers. Once cooled, the starch changes and the blood sugar increases less if it is warmed. Again, this was a small study and therefore did not receive much attention.

And of course, in many afflictions, exercise regularly.
