Democrat Kathy Hoffman won the race for the position of Superintendent of Education in Arizona, according to the Associated Press, beating Republican opponent Frank Riggs in the second major win at the US level. State for a Democrat of Arizona during this election cycle.
Hoffman, a 32-year-old first-time candidate and speech-language pathologist, has achieved two massive political upheavals: he defeated veteran politician David Schapira in the Democratic primary this summer and then surpassed Riggs, a former California congressman at the its charter schools and educational policy.
Hoffman declared the victory Sunday night, while his return showed him a lead of 46,800 votes.
His candidacy was propelled by the popular legion of educators who became politically motivated during the #RedForEd teachers strike this spring.
For a time, his campaign manager was Noah Karvelis, the young polarizing activist and music teacher from Tolleson, who helped lead the strike in Arizona and became a target for his left-wing views.

Hoffman will lead the Arizona Department of Education, overseeing his programs and his bureaucracy. This will be an important test for an educator who has never held a complex management position.
Hoffman recently worked for two years as a speech-language pathologist at Sahuaro Ranch Elementary School in the Peoria Unified School District before resigning for full-time campaigning at the end of the last academic year. Previously, she worked in the Vail School District, near Tucson, and earned a master's degree from the University of Arizona.
The campaign between Hoffman and Riggs has sometimes been heated. Hoffman urged voters to reject him in favor of an educator at the head of the Ministry of Education, while Riggs repeatedly criticized Hoffman for his inexperience.
A former police officer, Riggs also attacked Hoffman for his position that Arizona schools should not increase the number of uniformed officers on campus. Hoffman said she preferred to add advisors.
Already known for his short temper online, Riggs suddenly took a long speech on Twitter Sunday night, a few hours after Hoffman withdrew from the poll.
In his tweetstorm, Riggs criticized local media outlets David Leibowitz and Barrett Marson, as well as lawyers Thomas Galvin and Jim Small.
