The eagerly awaited champion-versus-champion between the Women's Raw Champion, Ronda Rousey and SmackDown Women's Champion, Becky Lynch, will not take place as expected this Sunday at Survivor Series. The match was removed from the Survivor Series card because of injuries suffered by Lynch in the fray that closed the Raw Back Home Edition. The news of Lynch's injuries and the cancellation of the match was reported for the first time by Fightful.com, and then confirmed by Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer.
This sad news was immediately confirmed by the Tuesday edition of SmackDown Live, a Go-Home version. The ad team relived Monday night's events before announcing that Lynch was removed from the Survivor Series game for what she called a "broken face".
Six days before their match, Lynch appeared in Raw's main event segment to first attack Rousey in the locker room with her Dis-Arm-Her submission before leading a female invasion at SmackDown that took place at 39, inside the ring. During the skirmish in the ring, however, Lynch's nose was brutally opened following what appeared to be an inadvertent close shot by Nia Jax. Despite the injury, Lynch continued the attack, hitting Rousey in the ring with a steel chair as blood flowed from his face and fans chanted his name. Raw closed Monday night with an iconic image of Lynch standing among the supporters, overwhelming Rousey in convalescence in the square circle.
To date, there has been no substitute opponent named for Rousey in the Survivor Series – if there is one with the indefinitely retired female SmackDown champion.
To say that Lynch's unfortunate injury was timely would be a huge euphemism. Not only did the reigning female SmackDown champion quickly emerge as the company's biggest female star, but her performances have recently been touted by many as the undisputed best global performer of the WWE – man or wife. All that included his invasion charge Monday night had longtime fans comparing the moment to the iconic promo "Austin 3:16" directed by "Stone Cold" Steve Austin in June 1996 at King of the Ring which served as a catalyst to propel him into a completely different stratosphere with respect to celebrity. The match with a star such as Rousey on Sunday night at Survivor Series was likely to fuel even more Lynch's momentum, winner or loser.
Nevertheless, despite the unfortunate nature, there is reason to be optimistic about the future. Lynch can not compete in the ring for an indefinite period, no, but one trait that has helped her do so much as she has done recently is her ability to do wonders at microphone.
