(RNN) – An extremely lucky person defeated $ 302.5 million last month to win the $ 1.5 billion record Mega Millions jackpot.

But nearly three weeks have passed since the lottery fever swept the country and the winner still has not come to claim his prize.

The draw of October 23 resulted in a winning ticket in Jackpot South Carolina. The state of Palmetto is one of seven states where winners can remain anonymous.

Even then, the winner must always come forward to claim the prize. And they do not always have to do it.

South Carolina grants the winner only 180 days from the ticket purchase date to collect their winnings.

If the jackpot is not claimed, each participating state will recover all the money it has paid. Unclaimed lottery prizes are used for different purposes by each state.

To claim the jackpot, the winner will have to sign the back of his ticket and call the lottery at 1-866-736-9819.

The South Carolina Education Lottery advises the winner to place the ticket in a safe place and talk to a trusted financial advisor.

After that, they will have to choose whether they want a lump sum of money in advance or an annuity.

The cash option will bring them $ 878 million. The annuity, however, will earn them the full jackpot of $ 1.537 billion over the next 30 years, each 5% higher than the previous one.

The store that sold the winning ticket, KC Mart in Simpsonville, South Carolina, will receive $ 50,000, according to ABC News.

The current Mega Millions jackpot is worth $ 106 million. Winning numbers will be drawn each Tuesday and Friday night at 11 am ET until the sale of another winning ticket.
