A supersonic T-38 Talon aircraft crashed Tuesday night at Laughlin Air Force Base in South Texas, according to the US Air Force. Emergency personnel responded to the scene, they said. The base is located near the US-Mexico border, said CBS subsidiary KENS-TV, near the city of Del Rio.

There was no immediate word on the state of the pilot and if there was anyone on board.

The Air Force describes the T-38 Talon as a "two-engine, high-altitude, supersonic jet trainer used in a variety of roles." They said the jet has "high performance" characteristics and an "exceptional safety record".

KENS-TV notes that the base is located 150 miles west of San Antonio.
