JERUSALEM – The Israeli army announced that it fired at a Palestinian who had approached Gaza's perimeter fence and threw grenades at Israel.

Wednesday's incident marked the first turmoil since Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza agreed to a ceasefire negotiated by Egypt to end two days of fierce fighting with Israel sworn enemies on the brink of another war.

The army said to have seen the assailant with a knife and sharp pliers. The grenades that he launched did not explode.

The Israeli army said that Palestinian militants fired 460 rockets and mortar shells at Israel within 24 hours, while it was conducting air strikes on 160 Gaza targets. Seven Palestinians, including five militants, were killed. In Israel, one person was killed in a rocket strike and three others were seriously injured.
