Sierra Fire bursts near Los Angeles, posing another challenge to first responders

A new bush fire is reported in southern California, consuming vegetation and threatening homes in the eastern suburbs of Los Angeles, officials said Wednesday morning.

The Sierra Fire at Fontana, about 50 miles east of downtown LA, burned at least 147 acres, The authorities of San Bernardino County said.

Firefighters were in "structure protection" but there were no immediate evacuations.

The fire broke out at 9:30 pm. Tuesday, near Interstate 15, at the intersection of North Riverside and Sierra Avenue in Fontana, the officials said.

The Sierra Fire is about 90 miles east of Woolsey Fire, which killed at least two people, and Hill Fire. The two large fires have depleted the resources of the first responders in L.A. and Ventura counties.
