MONROE COUNTY, MONTH – The body of a missing ballerina from the St. Louis area was found in the water at Mark Twain Lake State Park on Wednesday morning.
Raffaella Maria Stroik, 23, lived in St. Louis but is originally from South Bend, Indiana. She played with the St. Louis Ballet.
Divers found his body around 9:40 am near the 107 launch ramp after a private jet pilot flying over the Missouri recreation area spotted what was going on. he thought he was a person in the water, investigators said.
The circumstances of his death were not known Wednesday night. An autopsy is in progress on Thursday to determine the cause of death. There seems to be no indication of foul play. Police say that there seems to be no threat to the public.
Stroik was last seen Monday morning at the Whole Foods Market in Town and Country. His vehicle was found the same day, two hours away, in rural Monroe County. The ranger who discovered the vehicle did not think it was suspect because no missing person was reported at that time.
A soldier from the state of Missouri found that Stroik's car was still in the parking lot on Tuesday. The car was locked and his belongings, including a cell phone, were found inside the vehicle.
"We found his keys on the outside of the vehicle," said Sgt MSHP. Eric Brown said. "They appeared to have been intentionally placed at a certain point in the vehicle."
The forces of order contacted the Stroik family. Her family did not know she was at the lake, located about 150 miles northwest of St. Louis. They discovered that she was missing and a report was filed.
The authorities searched for the missing woman on the ground and in the air. Crews also searched for water. The search was interrupted when the night became too dark Tuesday night. About 100 people were looking for Stroik, including community college students, firefighters and police.
Stroik's car was found on one side of the lake. The body was discovered Wednesday morning on the other side of the lake.
The St. Louis Ballet posted this message on Facebook on Wednesday:
"As we deal with this heartbreaking tragedy, we want to take the time to celebrate this beautiful dancer, this spirit and this human being, and we will miss her warm and bright smile so much in the corridors and rehearsals." Our hearts, our thoughts and our prayers with her family, those who knew her, and all the dancers and staff in mourning, join us in this tribute if you know her by saying something you remember <3 "
The archdiocese of St. Louis said that people pray for Stroik during a mass today at the Basilica-Cathedral.
