The US men's national team did not bother second-tier England as much, bowing 3-0 at Wembley Stadium on a day marking Wayne Rooney's last appearance in his home country.
The United States fell to 3-4-4 under the direction of interim manager Dave Sarachan. The loss was followed by goals from Jesse Lingard, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Callum Wilson.
Despite the return of Christian Pulisic, the Dortmund star's second appearance since the October 2017 failure in Trinidad and Tobago and his first since 89 relay against Bolivia in May, the US attack did not really worry England. The match was lost in the middle of the field, where England dominated the ball and possession of the ball and dominated the match as it pleased.
England's dominance began in the first minutes and earned two quick kicks. The last of the two forced Brad Guzan to make a sensational stop to bring down Dele Alli's head, but a whistle from the referee would have canceled a goal anyway.
Guzan almost blundered a few minutes later when his attempt to play at the back gave England a turn. Wilson could not, however, return Lingard's center, leaving the US to leave.
The United States had a brief glimpse of the light before the wheels fell. First, Pulisic was played in space through the right channel, but his center was caught by Jordan Pickford on the goal line in the 16th minute. Eight minutes later, Pulisic found himself behind the English defense after defeating several defenders on the fly and scored Pickford 1-v-1, but Everton's cap made the save.
It was expensive at the other end almost immediately, when Lingard completed a magnificent shot from Guzan's right foot in the 25th minute. A few minutes later, Alexander-Arnold doubled the ball's lead by scoring a goal, his first in an English jersey.
The United States tried to return to the match by Julian Green in the 36th minute, which was pushed by a distant shot. His dazzling luck tipped Pickford into a tricky stop, but he sheltered him.
The match continued to unfold with more identical things in the second half, with England generally appearing to be the most competent of the two teams. The most anticipated moment by Wembley had arrived in the 58th minute, when Rooney had come into play as part of a multi-player substitution to a big ovation.
The Americans nearly scored a goal in the 66th minute for a quick corner kick. Pulisic conceded a small corner, turned around and shot in a dangerous cross that allowed Bobby Wood to be six meters away. His head went very high, keeping 2-0.
Five minutes later, Rooney, who was the target of a brief pitch invasion, had his first chance to shoot at the goal, attempting a 18-yard southpaw after being set up by Jadon Sancho. The star of D.C. United touched the arm waiting for Guzan, much to the disappointment of the faithful of Wembley.
The third goal of England was however achieved early enough, while Wilson marked his debut in senior national team with a first international record. He beat John Brooks at the far post before redirecting the center of Fabian Delph's center, bringing the score to 3-0 for the hosts.
Rooney had a last chance to score on his last selection in stoppage time, but a diver, Guzan, prevented him from keeping the score 3-0.
Rooney ends his international career with 120 caps and 53 goals, an all time record for England.
