MOBILE, Ala (WKRG) – News 5 receives news of a strong explosion in Mobile County. Mobile Fire even answered a call for a possible explosion but found nothing. News reports in our newsroom, the boom was heard in Mobile and Grand Bay, Semmes, Daphne and other areas.
The most plausible explanation is a sonic boom of a military jet plane, as there are many along the gulf coast.
NASA also announced on Twitter that it was performing supersonic tests near Galveston in Texas
There was, however, a Space-X rocket launch at about the same time. It is not clear that this is what everyone has heard. Some of the articles in our newsroom were going to coincide with that time, but others were much older. The launch of the rocket occurred at approximately 2:46 pm Central Time, according to the Space-X YouTube Channel
SpaceX is targeting the launch of the Es'hail-2 satellite on Thursday, Nov. 15 from Launch Pad 39A (LC-39A) at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The main launch window opens at 3:46 pm Is where 20:46 UTC, and closes at 17:29 EST, or 22:29 UTC. The satellite will be deployed in a geostationary transfer orbit approximately 32 minutes after take-off. A backup launch window opens on Friday, November 16th at 3:48 pm. EST, or 20:48 UTC, and closes at 17:29. EST, or 22:29 UTC.
News 5 has checked the seismic readings, and there is no evidence of an earthquake in the area. There was also nothing to report about a possible explosion.
Sonic arrows on airplanes are common in the region, but the cause is unknown.
