Adding to the chaos surrounding the campfire disaster, law enforcement officers on Thursday shot dead a homicide suspect after clashing near the evacuation zone in the event of a fire. .
A police dog from Sutter County was also killed by police fire, as well as the suspect's dog.
Butte District Attorney Mike Ramsey said the shooting did not seem to be linked to the deadly fire.
Ramsey said the incident had started shortly before noon outside a fire-ravaged hardware store near Concow, alongside Paradise and Magalia. The store is outside the evacuation zone and people are allowed in the area, but Ramsey said witnesses called Butte's sheriff's office because the man "was acting strangely".
The man, a 48-year-old parolee, was not identified Thursday. Ramsey said he was suspected of a double homicide that occurred about three years ago. Ramsey, who had met with reporters a few miles south of the scene of the incident, had no details about this previous case.
As the Sheriff's deputies approached him, he jumped into his car and sped south on Highway 70 to the intersection of Pentz Road, a few miles south of Paradise. There, a police "safety band" defeated the tires of his car and fell to the water.
The officers ordered him to get out of his car and raise his hands in the air, Ramsey said. He responded by saying, "You must have left me alone" and "I will not go back," according to Ramsey. He added that the man had already been incarcerated for weapons.
Ramsey said the officers "had heard they heard a rattling sound" and released the Sutter County Police Dog. Seven officers fired at the man – three Butte deputies, three Shasta deputies and an officer from the California Department of Fisheries and Wildlife – killed him at the scene.
Ramsey said that the dog Sutter was shot by a friendly shot. The K-9 did not die immediately and was then attacked by the suspect's pit bull. An officer killed the pit bull but the police dog could not be saved.
He said that officials of the State Department of Justice were investigating the shootings.
