Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker condemned high school students who appeared to deliver Nazi greetings to a photo, calling teenagers "a bunch of idiots".
Walker was asked Thursday about Baraboo High 's student photo that went viral earlier this week. The answer without ambiguity? "I think they are just stupid. I think they are idiots. It's as simple as that. I do not know if it's more complicated than that, it's just a bunch of idiots. "
The photo of about 60 boys was taken in front of the Sauk County Courthouse in Baraboo last spring. About two-thirds of boys have their right arms lifted up in a semblance of Nazi salvation.
The parent who took the picture said that he was simply asking teens to say goodbye to their parents before heading to prom, as Fox News had previously announced.
He had never imagined that the image would attract widespread condemnation.
"The optics are not good," said Associate Press Pete Gust, who has a son in the photo, although he does not think the boys are making a Nazi salute. "There has never been any idea of that. (…) There was no intention, in any way whatsoever, to simulate anything that offended anyone
Gust claimed that his camera had simply picked up the wave of boys prematurely, claiming that he "regretted that I did not get to the top".
Half a dozen speakers addressed the issue Monday night at a school council meeting. Kevin Vodak, chairman of the board, said in the photo, "I am deeply disappointed, depressed, frightened and upset."
