A US citizen claiming to be a spy when he was arrested in North Korea was deported to the United States after a month of captivity, said one official.

Speaking under the guise of anonymity, a US official confirmed to the Associated Press that Bruce Byron Lowrance had been deported and taken a flight back to the United States on Friday. He would not provide any other details regarding his release.

The man was reportedly arrested on October 16 for illegally entering North Korea by China. The Korean Central News Agency said that he had told investigators that he was under the "manipulation" of the US spying agency.

In the past, North Korea detained American citizens arrested for a long time before well-known American personalities went to Pyongyang to ensure their freedom.

The latest release comes just one year after the death of Otto Warmbier, a university student, just days after he arrived in coma from North Korea after 17 months in captivity.

Pyongyang maintains that she denies that Warmbier was tortured while in detention, providing dubious medical records.

North Korea also announced Friday the test of a "new-modern" weapon, recently developed but unspecified, which could increase tensions between Pyongyang and Washington.

Lucia I. Suarez Sang, Fox News, and Associated Press contributed to this report.
