UNITED NATIONS – The United States voted for the first time against a US resolution confirming Syria's right to the Golan, which Israel captured during the 1967 war.
The decolonization commission of the General Assembly voted by 152 votes to 2, with 14 abstentions. The United States had previously abstained on the resolution, but on Friday they voted "no", joined by Israel.
The resolution calls Israeli laws, jurisdiction and the administration of the "occupied Syrian Golan" as "null and void".
US Ambassador Nikki Haley announced in advance that the United States would vote "no", calling the resolution "bias against Israel".
She added: "Moreover, the atrocities that the Syrian regime continues to commit prove its inability to rule anyone".
It is almost certain that the resolution will be adopted by the 193-member General Assembly in December.
