During his 11-year career in the NFL, Joe Flacco has never missed a game for an end-of-season injury. This series seems to end on Sunday as the most valuable former Super Bowl player has not played since his hip injury in the Baltimore Ravens' recent loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Officially doubtful, Flacco will force Baltimore to make a tough decision if he can not play. Lamar Jackson has served as an alternate quarterback and gadget player in the team's first nine games, but it remains unclear whether head coach John Harbaugh and his team plan to start the 2018 first-round pick this week. Instead, Robert Griffin III could eventually fill Flacco's shoes despite spending every game of the season on the list of inactive players. The direction chosen by the Ravens will tell a lot about Jackson's development.
In addition to news from Baltimore, league teams face their own injury issues.
buccaneers: Chris Godwin (ankle) – Although the Buccaneers said Chris Godwin was doubtful, he exercised fully on Friday, suggesting he would be suitable for Sunday's game against the Giants. If Godwin or one of his offensive teammates can match their performances early in the season, Dirk Koetter now calls playing is unclear.
Chargers: Keenan Allen (hip, finger), Antonio Gates (knee), Mike Williams (groin) – The Chargers removed Keenan Allen from their last injury report despite multiple ailments. Meanwhile, Mike Williams also escaped the report despite an injury to his groin. Both will play Sunday against the Broncos. Antonio Gates could however miss the contest. Los Angeles ranked it as questionable.
heads Sammy Watkins (foot) – Sammy Watkins did not participate in Friday's practice, sowing doubt as to his availability for Monday's much-anticipated tilt between the Chiefs and Rams. Nevertheless, the extra day could make a difference in the resumption of the campaign. Watkins, who also missed last week with his foot injury, has clocked 17 receptions for 243 yards and two goals in his last three games.
The Lions: Marvin Jones (knee) – The Lions have already ruled out the top contributors to Sunday's game with the Panthers, including lead receiver Marvin Jones. The absence of Jones leaves only four healthy full-time assists on the list, starring Kenny Golladay.
Raiders: Martavis Bryant (knee), Jordy Nelson (knee) – The Raiders will play this week without any of their top outsiders after dismissing Martavis Bryant and Jordy Nelson, both knee injuries. Their absences probably mean another busy day for tight teammate Jared Cook, who leads the team on targets (59), receptions (546) and touchdowns (3).
rams: Cooper Kupp (knee) – Even though the Rams have been slow to confirm, Cooper Kupp will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL. Head coach Sean McVay confirmed Friday that Kupp had undergone surgery, which could mean that the draw would return in the fold before the start of the 2019 season. Whatever it is, Los Angeles will use Robert Woods more frequently in the slot, with Josh Reynolds observing more action in sets of three favorite receivers of the team.
ravens: Joe Flacco (Hip) – Although Joe Flacco has not missed a lot of games during his NFL career, his status for Sunday seems to be seriously compromised, after the Ravens called him dubious with a hip injury. Without Flacco, the offensive beginners of the team would feel the effects, especially receivers John Brown and Michael Crabtree. Baltimore left Robert Griffin III idle at every game of the season, but he could eventually pick up the first-round pick, Lamar Jackson, if Flacco could not leave, although Baltimore did not reveal his plans.
Steelers: James Conner (concussion) – With The Veon Bell officially unavailable for the remainder of the season, James Conner will have every chance to complete his escape campaign. However, the back of the second year suffered a concussion during the Steelers' 10th week game against the Panthers. The team removed Conner from the injury report, but he has not yet officially obtained clearance from the concussion protocol.
