It might be Sonny again in Oakland, but there would still be a long way to go.
The Morales have contacted the Yankees about the acquisition of right-handed pitcher Sonny Gray, "but the talks are not yet launched," said Jon Morosi, of the MLB network, on Friday.

Last week, Jon Heyman of Fancred said the A's were interested in the re-acquisition of Gray, who played at Oakland from 2013 to 2017 before being traded to New York. As Morosi pointed out, they had no problem bringing back old pitchers and there are good reasons for a return to Oakland to bring the best of Gray.
On the one hand, he was a better pitcher away from Yankee Stadium since the Bronx Bombers acquired him at the trade deadline in 2017. Gray scored 6-7 with an ERA of 6.55 and 1.70 WHIP in 88.0 innings in the Bronx. In contrast, he was 9-9 with an ERA 2.84 and 1.18 WHIP on the road. In 386.0 innings at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum with the A's, Gray was 25-20 with an ERA of 3.50 and 1.17 WHIP.
Injuries inflicted on promising young beginners such as Sean Manaea and AJ Puk forced the A to use a patchwork start rotation in the past season, and the team relied on a bull strategy to reach their first playoff game in four years. As a result, Billy Beane, A's executive vice-president of baseball operations, has identified the start of the throws as the team's top priority this season.

Reacquiring Gray would maintain the approach that kept the rotation afloat last season but offered much more A potential than bringing back Cahill and Anderson. The Yankees actively seeking to trade Gray, that makes a lot of sense for both teams.
According to Morosi's report, it would appear that they will have to start picking up the phone.
