LINCOLN, Nebr. – Michigan State made a change at the quarterback for their last game on the road of the season.
Rookie Rocky Lombardi started for the Spartans (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) in Saturday's game against Nebraska (3-7, 2-5), replacing Brian Lewerke, the junior in the red shirt.
It was Lombardi's second career start, which racked up 318 yards and two touchdowns in a 23-13 home win against Purdue on Oct. 27.
Mark Dantonio says QB's decision will remain "internal"
Lewerke was injured in the October 13th victory at Penn State and played in Michigan's next week's defeat, before his 20 consecutive defeats were broken against the Boilermakers. He started the last two games – a Maryland victory and a loss to Ohio State last week – but was replaced by Lombardi.
Since he was injured against Penn State, Lewerke has only completed 37% of his passes (27-in-73) for 281 yards, two interceptions and zero touchdowns in his last three games. Lombardi is 7-for-22 for a total of 92 yards, an interception and zero touchdown in his last two games.
Lombardi took the starting lineup representatives during pre-game warm-ups in Nebraska, while the real freshman, Theo Day, was working with the second team.
Starter Darrell Stewart Jr., injured in the loss to Ohio State, is dressed against Nebraska, as well as catcher Laress Nelson, who has missed four games this season. Jalen Nailor, receiver, cornerback Josh Butler, goaltender David Beedle, attacking midfielder Weston Bridges and scorer Bryce Baringer.
