Two companies in Utah recalled a combination of nearly 100,000 pounds of meat after an inspection had revealed the presence of E. Coli in samples of their raw ground beef.
Most of the meat – about 99,260 pounds – comes from the Swift Beef Co. based in Hyrum. About 530 pounds of ground beef products from Salt Lake City's Majestic Meat Company were also recalled, according to a press release issued in the United States. Department of Agriculture.
The recalls touched ground beef patties, bulk ground beef and 10 pound wrappers of beef, pork and veal Majestic Meat Company in restaurants in Utah. All products involved in the recall are marked "EST. 19915 "printed inside the USDA inspection mark.
Swift Beef Co.'s 8 to 10-pound packs consisting of ground beef and 2,000-pound bulk pallets of finely chopped beef for further processing or distribution in California, Nevada, in Oregon, Washington, and Utah were recalled. The beef samples from both companies were tested positive Thursday for a potentially lethal type of E. Coli bacteria, which can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and stomach cramps. While many people recover from exposure after a week, some people may develop a hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure.
Symptoms of hemolytic uremic syndrome include pale skin, easy bruising and increased urinary output. Anyone with these symptoms should consult a doctor, according to the release.
So far, the authorities have not confirmed any cases of illness after consuming the affected beef.
