Sunil Edla has lived in the United States since 1987.
A 61-year-old man from Telangana was shot in front of his apartment in the United States a few days before his trip to India, his family said.
Sunil Edla had planned a two-month trip to India to visit her mother on the occasion of her 95th birthday and celebrate Christmas with her family. "Everyone was calling and talking to him because he was leaving for India so soon," said his cousin Raj Casula.
Mr. Edla was shot and killed by a 16-year-old boy during a car theft in the town of Ventnor, according to information received by his relatives on Saturday.
The City of Ventnor Police Department said it located Mr. Edla on the sidewalk near his home on November 15, shot and wounded. He had succumbed to his injuries just as the police arrived.
Mr. Edla's vehicle, a 2002 Subaru Forester, was later found about 6 km from his home in Atlantic City. Once the vehicle was found by the police, the suspect was found and arrested on 16 November. He has been charged with murder, robbery, hijacking of car and illegal possession of a handgun in connection with a juvenile complaint.
"I'm just speechless right now, they could have taken the car and let it go," said Mr. Edla's son, Morrison, in an article published on NBCPhiladelphia.com.
A father of two, Mr. Edla had lived in Atlantic County for 30 years and worked in the hospitality industry in Atlantic City. Mr. Edla was leaving his home to work when the teenager shot him and escaped with his car.
A neighbor said the murderer ambushed Mr. Edla and shot him on the sidewalk near the second floor staircase. The surveillance video showed the teenager who was riding at Mr. Edla's home. The boy left his bike and hid while he was waiting for Mr. Edla to get out of the house.
