SYDNEY – An Australian swimmer died of a heart attack after being stung by a ray.
Police said the 42-year-old man had made a cardiac arrest on Saturday in Lauderdale Beach, east of Hobart, Tasmania, after being injured at the puncture point in his lower abdomen.
He was swimming alone and near the shore when the attack occurred. Friends pulled him out of the water but failed in their attempts to resurrect him.
The incident recalled the death of "Crocodile Hunter" in 2006, Steve Irwin, while shooting an underwater scene for a television series, while stingray spikes pierced his heart.
