Cyclone Gaja's balance sheet stands at 45

Hurricane Gaja's toll hit 45 people, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami told reporters on 18 November and called on leaders of all political parties to take part in the relief efforts.

He added that relief operations were taking place in areas affected by the hurricane storm and that ministers of state had been deployed to Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Pudukottai to monitor him. The state government is gathering information on areas hard hit by the hurricane, Palaniswami told reporters in Salem.

"In the villages, many trees and standing crops have been damaged, affecting the livelihoods of farmers. The extent of the damage is being evaluated. Up to now, 45 people have lost their lives because of the cyclone, "said the Prime Minister.

The Government of Tamil Nadu has announced the allocation of SKK 10 million to the families of each of the victims through the Emergency Relief Fund (CMPRF). Seriously injured persons would each receive 1 ¥ lakh, while those whose injuries were not serious would be entitled to compensation of ı 25,000.

Palaniswami said 1.7 lakh trees had been uprooted, 735 head of livestock, 1.17 homes damaged and 88,102 hectares of farmland affected in coastal districts.

Nearly 2.50 lakhs were accommodated in 483 relief camps. In addition, 1,014 mobile medical vans have been set up and so far, 1 lakh in the affected areas have benefited, said the Prime Minister.

Noting that 39,938 utility poles and 347 transformers were damaged in the affected areas, he said that 12,532 men from the state's power board had been sent on-site to perform the repair work.

Answering a question, Mr Palaniswami urged all political leaders and people to lend a helping hand in this difficult time. "It's a natural calamity. There should be no difference, such as the opposition or the ruling party, in handling relief operations. I appeal to everyone to help those affected, "he said.

Asked about the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Tamil Nadu, he said that the state government had informed the Center of the damage caused by the cyclone. Mr. Palaniswami said: "At present, authorities and ministers have been requested to visit the affected areas. If necessary, we will ask the help of the center.

"Right now, we have a hard time removing uprooted trees and replacing damaged power poles," he said.

Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam visited Nagapattinam and said relief operations in the affected districts were on a war footing and the normal situation would be restored.
