The "decolonization committee" of the United Nations General Assembly voted 152 to 2 in favor of a resolution attacking Israel's control over the Golan Heights, with 14 abstentions.
The United States had previously abstained on the resolution, but on Friday they voted "no" for the first time, joined by Israel, which has retained control of the region since Syria and three other Arab nations attacked Israel during the Six Day War of 1967.
The Golan Heights remain a strategic pillar for Israel, shielding it from Iran's military forces, which operate freely in Syria and swear at the destruction of Israel, as well as Islamist terrorist groups such as ISIS.
The resolution, which was adopted with eight other anti-Israeli resolutions, states that the Israeli jurisdiction and administration of the "occupied Syrian Golan" are "null and void".
US Ambassador Nikki Haley announced in advance that the United States would vote "no," calling the resolution "bias against Israel."
She added: "The atrocities that the Syrian regime continues to commit prove its inability to rule anyone."
It is virtually certain that the resolution will be adopted by the 193-member General Assembly in December, dominated by nations hostile to Israel.
Israeli ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, welcomed the US decision and said: "The evolution of the US voting system is further testimony to the close cooperation between the two. country. I thank Ambassador Haley for her consistency with Israel and the truth. It is time for the world to distinguish between those who stabilize the region and those who sow terror. "
The constant and disproportionate attention of UN agencies to condemn Israel has led the Jewish state and its closest ally, the United States, to withdraw from bodies such as UNESCO and the United Nations Human Rights Council.
