The latest American Rhodes Scholar promotion includes 21 women, the largest number ever in a single class, the organization announced on Saturday. In addition, almost half of the 32 people selected to receive the annual scholarship are first-generation Americans and immigrants.
The estimated scholarship is awarded to students from more than 320 US colleges and universities.
This year's cohort also admitted for the first time the recipient of the Deferred Action for Child Arrivals and included academics representing more than 64 countries.
The Rhodes Trust provides full financial support to academics who wish to graduate from Oxford University for two or three years.
The total value of the fellowship ranges from $ 70,000 per year to $ 250,000 for researchers remaining in Oxford for up to four years.
The process for candidates is twofold. The first students must be approved by their college or university, then the members of the US District Selection Committee where the students reside invite potential candidates for in-person interviews.
This year, more than 2,500 students have sought the endorsement of their respective institutions. Only 880 of them were selected from 281 American colleges and universities.
