Nirankaris are considered heretics by orthodox Sikhs and have long been targets of extremists. Their conflict with the sect in the late 1970s, which culminated in the assassination of Nirankari leader Gurbachan Singh, was one of the hotspots of the Khalistan movement.
CM Amarinder Singh said that it was the first long-standing attempt to disturb the peace in the state by indiscriminate killings.
The hand of Khalistani or Kashmir terrorist groups supported by ISI was not excluded. The intelligence services have been warning ISI for some time to revive its "K2" plan – Kashmir and Khalistan – to balkanize India.
"The police teams have been dispatched to attack the alleged hiding places of the attackers and many teams are exploring different angles," the police chief said in a statement.
The faithful gathered for a satsang (spiritual speech) at the Rajasansi branch of Nirankari Bhawan in the Adliwal village of Amritsar district. The initial investigation revealed that two men with a covered face, one of them with a floating beard, forced themselves into the site.
They arrested the sewadar, threw a grenade into the room and ran away on a motorcycle. The explosion caused a 3-inch crater. A forensic team recovered the safety pin from the grenade used during the strike.
Amarinder announced the payment of compensation of 5 lakhs each to the families of the three men killed in the attack, identified as Sandeep Singh, Sukhdev Kumar and Kuldeep Singh. Two of the wounded are in critical condition.
