Dear ones mourn a New Jersey couple who died in a chain reaction crash on I-78 while traveling to their wedding.
Kathryn Schurtz, 35, and her fiance, Joseph Kearney, drove Wednesday around 2:30 pm on I-78, in Windsor Township, Berks County. when the accident occurred.
Traffic was intense at that time in both lanes westbound due to an accident prior to kilometer 32.5. A semi-trailer truck was heading west and could not stop because of the traffic. He struck the couple's vehicle, which was then pushed into the back of another trailer, triggering a chain reaction involving three other semi-trailers.
The couple's vehicle and two of the semi-trailers caught fire. Schurtz and Kearney were both killed in the accident while three other people were injured.
Schurtz and Kearney were traveling to their wedding in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the time of the accident.
Schurtz was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey and grew up in Fanwood, New Jersey. She is a graduate of Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. She then attended George Washington University where she graduated in liberal arts before obtaining her MBA from Notre Dame.
Schurtz worked as a platform partner for Oracle Data Cloud in New York and was based in Jersey City, New Jersey at the time of his death. His mother was also a councilor at Fanwood.
The loved ones say they will remember Schurtz for his "voracious appetite for reading, his love of cooking and his new adventures" with his fiance Joseph Kearney.
A visit will take place to the Immaculate Heart of Mary R.C. Church, 1571 Martine Avenue, Scotch Plains, New Jersey, on Monday from 4pm. at 8 pm and on Tuesdays from 10 am to 11 am, followed by a Mass at 11 am
In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Kathryn M. Schurtz Scholarship Fund of Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains, New Jersey.
