A teacher from North Carolina who disappeared last month while he was walking in Mexico died, according to an article posted on the Chihuahua Governor's verified Facebook page.
Patrick Braxton-Andrew, 34, of Davidson, disappeared October 28 after leaving his hotel in Urique. Governor Javier Corral Jurado, writing in Spanish, said that Braxton-Andrew had crossed the path of a drug dealer of the Sinaloa cartel and had been killed in a "cowardly and brutal murder".
A Facebook page created to find Braxton-Andrew reported that authorities in the state of Chihuahua had confirmed the death and were looking for those responsible to bring them to justice.
"The family wishes to thank the Governor and the Attorney General of Chihuahua for their unwavering commitment to locating Patrick," said a message on PBA Find's Facebook page.
"Patrick died doing what he liked: traveling and meeting people. Join us to celebrate his life as he wishes. We will always remember Patrick and his joie de vivre. We love you PBA. "
His disappearance has attracted national and international attention. Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina tweeted about the case two weeks ago, claiming that he was working with the state department and the Mexican law enforcement agencies. On Thursday, he tweeted that he and his wife were deeply saddened to learn of his death.
"Patrick's family deserves justice, and I will continue to work with the @StateDept and federal officials as Mexican law enforcement agencies continue their investigation," he wrote.
The city of Davidson, North Carolina, also waved its flags as a half-employee Friday, the city said on Facebook.
