Images of the waves were shared on Twitter, showing the huge waves ripping through the houses, restaurants and hotels of the popular resort of Mesa del Mar. According to local reports, 39 people in total were evacuated from their homes, but no one was hurt. The local mayor, Alvaro Davila, also added that 65 apartments, some of which are holiday homes, were evacuated.
It is unclear whether Britons were invited to leave their apartments, although the city is very popular with British holidaymakers.
According to the Spanish Meteorological Agency, an orange level warning about waves in the Canary Islands has been downgraded to yellow.
The video footage was uploaded to social media by Nelson Acosta and shows the gigantic waves crashing against the side of a building, erasing the balustrades of concrete balconies.
The incident occurred after the regional government officials decreed the state of alert as a violent storm was falling on the north of Tenerife and the Other parts of the Canary Islands.
Waves up to six meters high would have caused considerable damage, but the extent of this damage has not yet been fully assessed.
Shocked witnesses claim that at least one car was dragged offshore at Jover, La Laguna, and another at Puerto de la Cruz.
Garichico is one of the most affected areas by the waves that hit the dike and flooded the streets.
Locals fleeing the area also filmed the race that took them to safety.
Further south, in the hotspots of the Adeje holiday, waves were also reported that broke the windows of a hotel restaurant, but there were no injuries either.
