INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Police shot dead a man who shot at them from their homes in Indianapolis.

Police spokeswoman Genae Cook said the police responded to the house early Monday in the southern part of the city after the call was received by an incomplete 911 call. Cook said that the man had started firing on agents from the porch or inside the house upon their arrival.

Cook said the police fired back, hitting the man, and that he had been declared dead on the scene. His name was not immediately published.

Cook says it's "a tragedy for everyone involved," including this man's family and his officers. There were several other people sleeping in the house at the time of the shooting.

Cook says the investigation is in its infancy. The Marion County Attorney's Office will review the circumstances of the shooting.
