A New Jersey couple traveling to their wedding last week was killed in a serious road accident involving at least five semi-trailers, reports said.

Kate Schurtz and Joseph Kearney were traveling to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to get married after being hit by a tractor-trailer truck heading west on Interstate 78 in Berks County at around 2 pm 30. local time, reported WNBC. The semi-trailer truck pushed the couple's vehicle into another vehicle and launched a stack of five semi-trailers in total.

The couple's car and two of the semi-trailers caught fire, according to WNBC.

The Pennsylvania State Police did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

"Our nephew Joseph Kearney and his beautiful fiance Kate Schurtz were killed in a car accident while they were returning home for their wedding that day," wrote a relative, Mary Heinle, in a Facebook message.

"Our memories will help us to cross. These were really the brightest lights that went out much too early. "

Kearney is from Pittsburgh and Schurtz grew up in Fanwood, New Jersey, according to News 12 New Jersey. She would be the daughter of Fanwood's former advisor, Karen Schurtz.

"We will remember her for her voracious appetite for reading, her love of cooking and her new pioneering adventures with Joseph," says her obituary.

Laura Allio wrote in a Facebook article that, although she had not spoken to Schurtz for some time, she will not forget about the "positive impact" that Schurtz had on her.

"I have only good memories with her," Allio wrote.

"Never forget how fragile life is. Her family was to celebrate her marriage, not her and the death of her fiancé this weekend. "

The tragedy comes just weeks after the death of a couple of Texan newlyweds, Will Byler and Bailee Ackerman Byler, in a helicopter crash shortly after takeoff of their marriage.
