Joe Theismann described Alex Smith's injury as "heartbreaking" after watching the Redskins quarterback suffer a fractured fibula and tibia 33 years after his injury, ending his career.
Smith was injured in a third-quarter bag following the Redskins' 23-21 loss to the Texans on Sunday, painfully reminiscent of Theismann, a Redskins legend.
Theismann, who led the Redskins to victory at the Super Bowl 17 at the end of the 1982 season, was injured at the end of the career on November 18, 1985 on a bag from the Giants linebacker, Lawrence Taylor.
Theismann was in the stands of FedEx Field, Smith, 34, who sank under oddly similar circumstances and then told NBC Sports Washington: "It's heartbreaking, I feel bad for Alex. in the ninth match of 1985. [season] 33 years ago today.
"If it happened another day, I would feel so bad it would have been, but if it happened that day at that time, it was horrible.

"I saw him falling on the pile, and I saw everyone start to go wild, then there was a shot where he was lying and I saw him go. leg and I turned to my wife and I said: "It's the same thing that happened … I was completely shocked and stunned, I feel so bad for Alex.
"There is also an age factor when you are injured at this age, that's another thing you think about. You think of the direction this football team is taking, we are on the hunt he is the captain of the ship and we are in the hunt and now all of a sudden, [backup] Foal [McCoy] is in a role to take care of ".
Speaking at the post-game press conference, Redskins coach Jay Gruden said: "Alex had a great career, of course, without a doubt. we have such a wound, it is more heartbreaking than physical.
"It breaks your heart because it's what he likes to do, likes to lead this team, likes to be with guys, and now the season is over and he has a long way to go. It's just hard to see that this will happen to any athlete. "
McCoy scored for Smith and had 54 yards and a touchdown, but could not lead the Redskins to victory as they dropped to 6-4. They are still leading the NFC East in their Thanksgiving clash against the Cowboys (5-5) in Texas.
"I strongly believe in Colt McCoy's talent," said Gruden. "This is the opportunity of his life for him, I know he would like to have it in different circumstances."
