A former Ohio judge who served a prison sentence for assaulting his wife at the time, was arrested on Saturday after being stabbed to death.
Lance Mason, 51 – who pleaded guilty in 2015 to assaulting Aisha Fraser Mason in front of their children – was arrested in a suburb of Cleveland this weekend after his ex-wife was found dead in her driveway, according to her WKYC.
When the police arrived at the scene of the crash at Shaker Heights, Mason allegedly attempted suicide, then attempted to escape, pushing his vehicle into a police vehicle. He and an agent were taken to a hospital in the area.
Mason was charged with criminal assault for the officer's attack. According to Cleveland News 5, no charges were immediately laid following the death of 45-year-old Fraser Mason.
In 2014, Mason was arrested after hitting him 20 times, hitting her head against the dash of their car, and then driving away while she was bleeding on the ground, according to Cleveland. com. Their two young children were in the back seat of the vehicle.
The police then searched the family's home and found an arsenal of weapons including semi-automatic rifles, a bulletproof vest, 2,500 rounds of ammunition and smoke grenades.
Mason served as a Judge Advocate in Cuyahoga County until his dismissal one month after the attack. His wife filed for divorce, sought a protection order, and later sued Mason for $ 150,000 in damages. Mason was sentenced to a total sentence of two years and six months, but served only nine months, according to News 5.
After his release, Mason reportedly wrote on a blog to explain how the time spent behind bars had changed. Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson has chosen him to occupy the position of Director of Minority Business Development for the City – a paid job at $ 45,000 a year. This decision immediately sparked criticism from the local press.
Saturday, the mayor fired him. "I send my deepest condolences to Ms. Aisha Fraser's family, especially to her children," Jackson wrote in a statement obtained from the WKYC.
Fraser Mason was a sixth grade teacher at Woodbury Elementary School in Shaker Heights, which was attended by her two daughters. She was "a beloved and kind young woman and a servant of the community," said her uncle George Fraser at WKYC.
A candlelight vigil at school was scheduled for Monday night.
In the United States, more women are killed by their intimate partners than by any other type of abuser, writes Melissa Jeltsen of HuffPost. The police account for only a quarter of physical assaults against women. People who leave a violent relationship are much more likely to be murdered by their abuser in the few weeks following their departure than at any other time in the relationship.
