KUSA – Last week, the Ministry of Health and Social Services released its update of the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. Here are your facts in a nutshell on the new guidelines.
1) How much physical activity are you supposed to do each day?
For adults:
- At least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate physical activity every week (30 to 60 minutes a day for 5 days a week) OR, at least 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity every week (15 to 30 minutes per day for 5 days a week)).
- Mix at least 2 sessions of bodybuilding a week.
For kids:
- 3-5 years should be encouraged to be active all day.
- Young people from 6 to 17 years old should do at least one hour of physical activity a day and muscle building three times a week.
- For all children, that they are outdoors and that they run in the playground or that they play in the garden by bicycle or ball, the type of activity n & # 39; 39 does not matter. Just take them out of computers, mobile devices and TV screens.
2) Which activities do you do daily, which are considered moderate to vigorous?
- Anything that increases your heart rate and makes you breathe a little harder than normal is moderate (for example, brisk walking, water aerobics).
- Sturdy exercise makes you sweat and run out of breath (for example, running, cycling, jumping rope). So, take out these walking / running shoes, play tennis, ride a bike or go swimming. Basically, find what makes you happy and healthy!
3) Is there a minimum amount of time needed to reap the benefits of exercise?
This is a change from previous guidelines. Previously, you had to practice at least 10
minutes to get the benefits. Now, we recognize that there is no minimum time. If you use
the stairs instead of the elevator take you five minutes, it's great! These 5 minutes are added
your goal of daily physical activity of at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity.
4) True or false? Physical activity only benefits your heart.
False. The benefits of physical activity go far beyond the heart. Exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, reduce the risk of developing dementia, help
fall prevention and, of course, can extend your life.
